PhD course. Lecco 27 June – 1 July 2022

CHAIRS: Prof. Piero Macchi; Prof. Marco Moretti

PERIOD: 27 June -1 July 2022
VENUE: ADOLF LOOS RESIDENCE, Lecco

IMPORTANT: REGISTRATION TO THE COURSE IS STILL POSSIBLE, BUT THE RESIDENCE FOR THE ACCOMMODATION IS NOW FULLY BOOKED

MISSION AND GOALS

This course introduces PhD students to advanced research based on X-rays at large scale facilities. The goals are a) educating PhD students to the techniques that use Synchrotron X-ray sources and b) offering students the possibility to establish contacts with those facilities. The workshop is organized within the scope of PhD courses in Materials Engineering and Physics. It is also open for PhD students of other PhD Programs, for example Energy and Nuclear Science and Technology and Industrial Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

SUBJECT AND PROGRAMME OF THE COURSE

The course will cover the main aspects of the application of hard and soft X-rays generated from synchrotron sources or free electron lasers, for the structural and spectroscopic characterization of materials.
The following areas will be covered: a) elastic X-ray scattering (single crystal or powder diffraction); b) imaging methods (tomography, ptychography and coherent diffraction imaging); c) time resolved free electron laser diffraction for the determination of excited states; d) inelastic x-ray scattering and spectroscopy.
The program will consist of 30 lectures (45 minutes each) given by the invited external lecturers and the internal lecturers, covering the topics outlined above.
